Online lottery is on a clear upward path. Global forecasts vary. Grand View Research estimates the market was already worth USD 120.5 billion in 2024 and projects it to hit USD 167.8 billion by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate of 5.7 percent from 2025 to 2030. North America leads, especially the United States. Draw-based games made up 50.4 percent of the market in 2024 and remain dominant.

Other studies point to faster growth. Mordor Intelligence places global online lottery revenue at USD 13.22 billion in 2026, rising to USD 19.65 billion by 2031. Their projected CAGR is 8.25 percent, led by a boom in mobile platforms (57.26 percent share in 2025) and rapid growth in instant games, which outpace draw formats.

Why Online Lottery Is Set to Grow

Several tangible drivers are pushing this forward:

  • Mobile and digital convenience. Mobile platforms already accounted for more than half of online lottery transactions in 2025, with usage rising steadily thanks to 5G, digital wallets, and frictionless user experience. These technologies are making it easier for users to participate anywhere, anytime, enhancing accessibility and engagement. Moreover, the integration of voice assistants and AI-driven recommendations are further personalising the lottery experience, drawing in tech-savvy users.
  • Popularity of instant formats. Digital instant-win games are growing faster than traditional draw games. They mirror casual gaming and deliver quick outcomes, appealing to a generation accustomed to rapid satisfaction in digital entertainment. The ease with these games integrate into social media platforms also contributes to their popularity. In fact, many platforms are now enabling social sharing of wins, which not only maximises visibility but also increases player engagement through social proof dynamics.
  • Draw games still matter. Draw-based lottery remains the largest segment globally. In 2024 it made up over half of online lottery revenue. Traditionalists still crave the excitement of potential large jackpots, which continue to be a compelling draw for many players worldwide. Enhanced security features and transparency in draws are helping to fortify trust and comfort among players who cherish this classic format.
  • Regulatory expansion. In the United States, more states are introducing laws to enable iLottery platforms. This is reshaping the lottery landscape and paving the way for significant digital growth. Legislative changes enable a wider audience to legally access online lottery platforms, expanding the potential customer base significantly. For example, states like Kentucky and Michigan have reported significant revenue growth following the introduction of online platforms.
  • Omnichannel synergy. Digital lottery platforms are boosting engagement in physical retail too. More frequent play and cross-promotion can drive in-store sales even as online grows. Retailers benefit from enhanced customer activity driven by seamless integration between online and offline experiences. Loyalty programs that reward both digital and physical participation are key to maintaining this synergy.

Where the Opportunity Lies

The numbers clarify the opportunity. For instance, U.S. iLottery tracked by Eilers and Krejcik Gaming grew at a 41 percent CAGR. Online lottery quarterly gross sales reached USD 3.6 billion in Q2 of 2026. Yet draw-game formats remain underrepresented online – highlighting a ripe segment for transformation. This gap represents a substantial business opportunity for operators ready to innovate their offerings. Incorporating AR technology to create immersive experiences could be one way to re-energise these games.

Operators that reimagine draw games for digital are poised to benefit. Draw games offer strong margins (around 50 percent payout) and a loyal player base. Without fresh, interactive experiences they risk being left behind. Adding elements such as personalised gameplay, interactive features, and community engagement could invigorate these traditional formats. Gamification techniques, such as leaderboards and rewards for frequent play, offer paths to increased user loyalty and engagement.

What Makes Online Lottery the Next Big Thing

Here is what really sets online lottery apart today:

  • Massive and growing markets. From USD 120.5 billion in 2024 globally to double-digit growth driven by mobile and instant models. This expansion signifies a robust trajectory that’s primed for future success as technology and consumer familiarity increase. The adoption of more sophisticated data analytics tools is allowing providers to fine-tune offerings and optimize marketing strategies.
  • Technological readiness. 5G, digital wallets, and mobile-friendly formats make lottery access faster and more engaging than ever. This evolving tech landscape supports a seamless user experience and is integral to keeping pace with consumer expectations. Additionally, blockchain technology is beginning to feature in securing transactions and ensuring fair play, further increasing player trust.
  • Regulatory tailwinds. New state laws in the U.S. and international growth markets are opening doors for more authorised digital lottery. As more regions embrace legal frameworks for online gambling, the potential market continues to expand dramatically. Emerging markets in Asia and Africa are particularly promising, where smartphone penetration is rising rapidly.
  • Untapped categories. Digital draw games are under-leveraged despite their economics and familiarity. They are ripe for reinvention, and introducing innovative features could attract new demographics to these time-tested games. Engaging narrative elements and progressive jackpots could serve as major attractions for these durable formats.
  • Retail synergy. Online play complements, not cannibalises, traditional retail. It often increases total lottery engagement by enticing players into physical stores for redemptions or promotions, enhancing overall sales. For instance, online ticket purchases that offer in-store coupons for other goods create added value and incentivize cross-channel movement.

I’ve worked on lottery content for a while. When I see these clear data points aligning, it really clicks. The stage is set not only for continued growth but for a reinvention of how lottery plays in the digital world. As technology continues to evolve, these enhancements could transform lotteries into something more interactive and rewarding.

The task now is to turn that potential into compelling products and seamless experiences that embrace what players already love – massive jackpots, familiar rituals – while delivering them in a mobile, interactive, data-rich format. That blend will determine if online lottery truly becomes the next big thing.
